In 1995, BMW began development of a celebration of their historic and beloved 507 roadster. With an exterior penned by automotive artist Henrik Fisker (who went on to design the DB9 and the V8 Vantage for Aston Martin), the Z8 evoked the 507’s classic, reserved essence, while firmly setting BMW’s design outlook towards the future. An all-aluminum chassis and body creates a timeless interpretation of the quintessential roadster, simple and elegant, and belies the power of the 4.9 liter V8 under the hood. The interior reflects the simplicity of the body and intent of this car, with minimal instruments and switches, bringing all attention to the driving experience.
BMW sought to revive the pure exhilaration of their historic 507 in the Z8, with its simple, elegant curves, open top, and effortless motor. The all-aluminum space-frame chassis and body echo the stunning lines found on the 507, and provide an excellent backbone for the Z8’s torquey V8, putting down 395 horsepower and 369 lb./ft. of torque, and paired with a beautifully precise 6-speed manual transmission. Much of the running gear in the Z8 comes from the indomitable E39 M5, including McPherson struts up front, and a multi-link suspension in the rear, balancing a beautiful ride with the sporting nature of the Z8.
The interior is treated to the same level of attention and simplicity, with beautifully finished multi-function switchgear, a stunning one piece dashboard with centrally-mounted gauges canted towards the driver, and radio tucked neatly away in front of the shifter. Nothing extraneous can be found in the Z8’s interior, no swath of buttons or switches, simply what’s necessary, leaving the interior uncluttered and exclusively about the driving experience. Outside, lighting is provided by neon tubes, allowing for faster power-up and significantly longer lifetime compared to traditional incandescent of the time.
With its mile-eating chassis and powerful V8, the Z8 is an absolute joy to drive anywhere; a top-down Sunday evening cruise, a spirited rip through your favorite backroads, or a night out in the city, all sound tracked by the burbling V8. The BMW Z8 was an instant classic the day it debuted, and it remains so to this day.
This 2001 BMW Z8 we have to offer is a one owner example with only 10,000 carefully driven miles. Faithfully serviced, and only driven in nice weather, this Z8 is in need of nothing to be enjoyed. Finished in Jet Black over a Crème and Black leather interior. Never any accidents, rust or paintwork of any kind.
