The last of the air-cooled Porsches. The last of that special heritage, the unmistakable sound of a horizontally opposed 6 cylinder motor unmuffled by water cooling. Porsche’s 993 generation of 911s are revered for their traditional form and motor, while still standing toe-to-toe with their competition. The 993 Turbo was more of the same; classic Porsche turbo shape, air-cooled motor, but it wasn’t just a wide-bodied warmed-over 964 Turbo. The 993 Turbo would sprint to 60 in just 3.7 seconds, thanks to an all-new motor and turbocharging set-up. For such a traditionalist, the 993 Turbo had no problem keeping up with anyone.
Tony Hatter is responsible for the exterior design of the 993, managing to keep the distinct form of the 911 of the past 30 years, while subtly revising the body panels, smoothing the front and rear bumpers, and introducing the shapely teardrop mirrors. The cabin is instantly familiar, with little changed. The Turbo received a beautiful fixed “whale-tail” rear wing, which housed the twin intercoolers, as well as widened rear quarters, fresh front and rear bumpers, and front fenders, all redesigned to continue the classic Porsche shape while making room for the wider rear wheels and increased performance.
The beating heart of the 993 Turbo, a bespoke 3.6 liter flat-six, featured twin turbochargers, one per bank, and put down a whopping 400 horsepower and 400 lb/ft of torque. In addition to reworked cylinder heads and engine internals, the 993 Turbo received an impressive engine management system that allowed it to not only be faster and more responsive than ever before, but more efficient and one of the cleanest sports cars of its time. Hand-in-hand with this new engine management was the fitment of an OBDII diagnostic system, one of the first production cars to incorporate this technology. In a move that set the trend for its Turbo successors, the 993 Turbo featured an AWD based on the 959, with a passive viscous coupling that provided power to the front axle when the rear experienced a loss of traction.
This combination of roaring turbocharged power and unshakeable grip stuffed into the classic 911 shape made for the perfect swan-song for Porsche’s beloved air-cooled motors.
